EPIC JAM

Featuring Marilyn J. Smith

with Host Nat Wilson

Deaf Spotlight is thrilled to announce another Epic Jam on January 29, 2015  featuring Marilyn J. Smith!  She is sure to have you rolling in your seats as she regaled you with stories of falling and her escapades in the bedroom.

The goal of Deaf Spotlight’s Epic Jam is to revitalize the Deaf cultural gathering, where people can share poems and tell stories in American Sign Language (ASL). This is part of a long-time tradition that has been passed down from Deaf Clubs and Deaf schools through several generations. This is a fantastic opportunity for you to see, support and develop a larger pool of performers and poets who celebrate ASL.

The audience will be encouraged to interact and, in the process, develop an appreciation for why ASL literature is so deeply valued in the Deaf community.

Marilyn Jean Smith made her acting debut at the age of 42 and then graced the stage again just before turning 50. Both productions were directed by the famed Howie Seago who had the patience of Job with this novice.  Off the stage Marilyn loves storytelling ~ which she learned from watching her father ~ but didn't embrace until she learned sign language prior to entering Gallaudet in the late 1960s.

Marilyn believes that storytelling is an art and is an important and valued part of Deaf culture.  Her genre is comedy and, more specifically, laughing at herself and her life.  She firmly believes that comedy should not hurt others and her stories reflect that.  She has compiled a series of "Falling Down" stories among others which she will be sharing at Epic Jam.  For the first time, she will publicly sign some hilarious sex stories.

Hosting the evening with his heartwarming energy and inviting audience participation is Nat Wilson. Nat is a National Theater of the Deaf Alum, storyteller, comedian, and host for festivals and events celebrating ASL and Deaf culture.

Consider Epic Jam your “open stage” opportunity to share your poems and stories! Come and join us!
